1,000 Year Perspective

We work from a very long-term perspective. We are not focused on producing immediate, short-term benefits, but rather contributing toward long-range paradigm shifts that will serve people for generations to come.

We work from a very long-term perspective. We are not focused on producing immediate, short-term benefits, but rather contributing toward long-range paradigm shifts that will serve people for generations to come.

How it is possible to influence things on that scale? Picture a huge ship. The direction of the ship is changed by moving a relatively small rudder. On the rudder is an even smaller device called a "trim tab." When the ship needs to change direction, the trim tab is moved. The trim tab then moves the rudder, and the rudder moves the entire ship. In our work, we look for the "trim tabs"—where small efforts can lead to a major shift in direction.

In considering how to make the best use of our limited resources and energies for this purpose, we ask ourselves:

  1. How would we like to see the world 1,000 years from now?

  2. What actions can we take today to move things in that direction?

  3. In order to create that shift, are we ready to commit to 25 years of effort?
