In Liberia, Africa, there?s only one book for every 27 children. Many kids have never even seen a book. Can you imagine?
In February 2009, people in Kansas shared their love and friendship by collecting used books for kids in Liberia.
Dillons supermarkets partnered with Books for Life for a state-wide book drive. Several sponsors
contributed radio and TV spots, billboards, website development, printing, boxes and artwork. Hundreds of people volunteered to help box up the books.
Since people were asked to share the joy of their well-loved books with others, the theme of the book drive was ?There?s Love in Your Attic!?
As a result, Kansans gave more than 50,000 children?s picture books.
Kansas schools had also donated 17,000 textbooks?making a total of 67,000 books!
These gifts of books will not only encourage Liberian children to read and learn, they will spread hope to thousands throughout the world. Because when we all work together, we all win.
Plans are underway for shipping the books in special containers that convert into small ?libraries? after they reach Liberia. Plus, the book drive created so much enthusiasm that people are already talking about doing it again next year.
