Mrs. Sushiela Singh raised her family in the city of Allahabad in northern India. When her children were all grown and her husband of more than 30 years
died, she turned her attention to a subject close to her heart: providing education to girls from poor families so they could break free from the vicious cycle of poverty.
USMS is dedicated to providing students with the highest quality education possible. We focus on a curriculum that will enable students to get jobs that can help them escape from poverty.
The music, art and festivals of India are thousands of years old. Painting, crafts and instrumental music are taught at USMS as part of the curriculum in order to provide a complete education.
Most of the students at USMS come from families that cannot afford even basic health care. Many of their health problems used to go untreated, making it very difficult to pursue their studies and enjoy their lives.
People at USMS dared to dream of having a medical lab at the school. Such a lab could provide reliable, affordable medical testing for students at USMS as well as people in the surrounding community. It could also provide opportunities for medical education for older students, which could lead to possible careers in medicine.
Proper nutrition is essential to keep children healthy, so they can concentrate on their studies and enjoy their lives. Many students at USMS come to school not having had any breakfast. Some may not have eaten the night before either. Because of this malnutrition, many of the students have suffered from anemia.
The right supplies are important for children to learn in school and be able to study at home. USMS provides uniforms, shoes, textbooks and supplies to the students.
The uniforms give children a sense of pride in being able to go to school, and often are their best set of clothes. The shoes provided are sometimes their only pair.
The heart of any school is the people involved. Teachers at USMS have a passion for sharing the best possible education with their students. The teachers take continuing education courses on a periodic basis. This training helps them keep up with developments in the field of education and serve their students more effectively.
Allahabad is considered a holy city, and sits on the banks of two sacred rivers—the Ganges and the Yamuna—in the state of Uttar Pradesh. UNICEF reports that the average malnutrition rate in Uttar Pradesh is 40%, which is even higher than that of Sub-Saharan Africa.
